Minor Chords not in lower case?

Post by Jamie Lang » Nov 19, 2012 3:31 pm

Is this not a standard? I've never seen a theory book spell a typical jazz progression as IImi - V - I....it's always been ii - V - I.

Have I spent 20 odd years in obscure texts? I don't remember this issue in EM5...

Hi Jamie,

In EM5, the Roman numeral pattern was also II mi and not ii. Both systems are used, so none of them is wrong (see Dolmetsch for example: http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory31.htm). I understand that if you have used ii for many years, it might be challenging to see it written II mi.
