What is ear training?

Ear training is the process of connecting music theory (notes, intervals, chords, etc.) with the sounds we hear. The more we train our ear to recognize this connection, the more we enjoy playing music, because we learn to understand what we play.
Ear training for all musicians

Who needs ear training?

The short answer is...all musicians. Beginners and professionals alike need to train their ear in order to know what they are playing and to anticipate what they are about to play!

Understanding the sounds we hear is necessary to:

  • Jam with other musicians

  • Transcribe melodies and chords by ear

  • Compose music

  • Sing in tune
  • Add improvisation to your performance

  • Improve your rhythmic skills

  • Tune your instrument

  • Acquire greater musicality
All serious music schools and conservatories have requirements in aural skills for prospective students, and are devoting a great part of their curriculum to Ear Training.
But even if you are not planning to enroll at a music school, training your ear will widen your understanding and mastery of music as a whole, and will simply help you become a better musician!

Ear training the smart way: ear training software

Ear training typically requires two persons to be efficient: one to ask questions, and one to answer them. The feedback you get on how you identify intervals, chords or scales is the key element to your progression. This is where computers come in very handy for ear training. The most efficient way to train your ear is ear training software.
