Trouble setting up

Post by smiley »

I can't get the mic and the headphones configured correctly. As a result, when I sing notes into the program, they register at a different time than I am actually singing. I am very good at rhythm, so I'm sure it is mostly the machine. I keep changing the latency settings, mics, headphones, no headphones, etc., but I haven't had much success.

I am on an approximately 4-year-old laptop with Windows 11.

How do I set up Earmaster?

What are the best mic and headphones to use on Earmaster?

To fix latency on Windows 11, try switching the audio driver setting in EarMaster to ASIO or download ASIO4ALL if your device lacks native support. Avoid Bluetooth headphones, as wired connections are required to prevent audio delay.

Are you experiencing latency when playing rhythms on the space bar or when clapping in front of a mic?

In both cases, I suggest that you use wired headphones, as Bluetooth headphones usually introduce a huge latency. Also in EarMaster's preferences, you can adjust the latency settings in the option "Input timing offset" under "Other options". Set it to at least 120ms, and see if that helps. FInally, make sure to update EarMaster, as it is now using Windows' own low latency driver WASAPI.

Regarding the answer from @gouloatrea, EarMaster doesn't offer support for ASIO drivers, so that solution is not possible unfortunately, but WASAPI also offers low latency audio like ASIO.

I’ve had similar issues with audio software, and latency can definitely make accurate singing feel completely out of sync. I’d start by using a wired microphone and wired headphones rather than Bluetooth, since Bluetooth can introduce noticeable delay. It’s also worth checking that the same audio input/output devices are selected both in EarMaster and in Windows, then running the program’s audio calibration before adjusting latency manually. If possible, using headphones directly connected to the laptop and a basic USB microphone should provide a good starting point. Once the setup is stable, make small latency adjustments rather than changing several settings at once.

I’d start by using headphones with a wired connection and a simple USB mic if possible. Wireless/Bluetooth devices can introduce extra latency. In EarMaster, make sure the correct input and output devices are selected, then try lowering the audio buffer/latency setting gradually. Also check that Windows isn’t using different input/output devices for the app. This should help narrow down whether the delay is coming from the hardware or the settings.
